MRS LEWIS CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTION

[ An Article about Ms. Lewis' Re-Election Campaign]

Mrs. Alpha Hart Lewis, a candidate for re-election for the office of Superintendent of Schools of Boone County at the April 3 election, reports that all rural schools in Boone County are now classified. When Mrs. Lewis began her term of office, only 32% of the rural schools in the county met the standards of the State Department of Education sufficiently to be classified at all, in contrast to 100% now. Also, when she took office only 26% of the rural schools were rated as first class, or AAA, schools; now 74% of the rural schools are classified as AAA. Similarly the number of rural schools offering a hot lunch program to their children has increased from 4 to 20. At the present time all operating schools except two have Parent Teacher Associations.
“These advances,” said Mrs. Lewis, “have been possible because of School Board members, Parent Teacher Associations, and other school-minded patrons. Boone Countians are used to progress and success, and want to go forward, not backward. Believing that every child should have an opportunity for maximum development, Mrs. Lewis has continued and intensified the music and art program; she inaugurated a speech correction program. A life-long Boone Countian, Mrs. Lewis attended Stephens College and later received the degree B.S. in Education from the University of Missouri, where she majored in elementary education.

Her work toward a Master’s degree consists of special investigations of school problems of Boone County. Because of high grades and successful teaching experience, Mrs. Lewis was elected to membership in Pi Lambda Theta and Delta Kappa Gamma. She is a member of several other professional organizations, including the Boone County Community Teachers Association, the Missouri State Teachers Association, and the National Education Association. In 1949 she was vice-president of the Missouri Association of County Superintendents, and was a member of the nominating committee at the organizations of the National Association of County Superintendents. A teacher in the Sunday School of the First Baptist Church in Columbia for 22 years, Mrs. Lewis has an impressive record of community service. One of her policies as County Superintendent has been to cooperate fully in the School Bond and Savings Stamp Drives. Boone County rural schools participate 100% in the March of Dimes and 100% in Junior Red Cross. More than 20 years of successful teaching experience in rural schools of this county qualified Mrs. Lewis for election to office, and now she is basing her campaign for re-election on her record of accomplishment, understanding, and co-operation.
